The Hubertus Wald Tumour Centre, also known as the University Cancer Centre Hamburg, is the central cancer centre at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf and acts as a hub for all cancer treatment and research. It is one of eleven centres in Germany designated “Centre of Excellence in Oncology” by Deutsche Krebshilfe (German Cancer Aid) and is dedicated to providing:
Hubertus Wald Tumour Centre
Prevention of severe graft-versus-host reactions through the use of antisera and gene therapy protocols
After treatment a personalised physical therapy plan is developed for each patient. Psychologists offer mental support to all patients and families.
Autologous blood stem cell transplantation for all hematologic neoplasms and selected solid tumors and in cooperation with the Clinic of Neurology for patients with multiple sclerosis
The Clinic of Haematology and Oncology, under the direction of Professor Dr. Carsten Bokemeyer, primarily treat patients with cancer of the internal organs and the hematopoietic system.
Research areas include molecular targeted therapies, which turn off mechanisms crucial to the growth and/or development of metastases of malignant tumour cells. This form of therapy is explored for leukemia and solid tumours such as lung, colorectal, and renal cell cancer.
Haematology and Oncology, including Pneumology
Dose-reduced conditioning protocols (mini-transplants) for patients with multiple myeloma, lymphoma, leukemia, myelodysplasia, or myelofibrosis
Comprehensive treatment using state-of-the-art medical procedures.
Patients benefit from the long experience of a university hospital and a multidisciplinary approach to ensure that treatment is tailored to their needs.
Cancer research
Stem cell transplantation
Donor lymphocyte protocols (adoptive immunotherapy) for the treatment or prevention of relapses
Allogeneic blood or bone marrow stem cell protocols for non-malignant diseases, such as aplastic anemia or congenital metabolic diseases
Vaccination strategies after transplantation to treat minimal residual disease
Hamburg, Germany
Promotion and development of measures for preventing cancer and long-term effects of cancer treatment.
Research and development of new therapies through integrated clinical and laboratory research.
Psychological care and support of patients and their families.
Specialties are the diagnosis and treatment of blood cancer (leukemia and lymphoma), blood clotting disorders, germ cell tumours (e.g., testicular cancer) and malignant tumours of the gastrointestinal tract, connective tissue, respiratory system and the head and neck.
The Pneumology Section primarily treats patients with pulmonary hypertension.
After comprehensive diagnosis or 'staging', treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and hormone therapy. If necessary, the patient is accompanied by a pain management specialist during treatment.
The clinic has more than 100 beds, 44 doctors and 120 nurses and it treats nearly 24,000 in- and outpatients every year.
The stem cell programme, under the leadership of Prof. Nicolaus Kröger and founded by Prof. Axel R. Zander, is one of the largest in Europe.
The focus is upon the development of more effective strategies in the fight against leukemia and lymphoma, using the latest cellular immunotherapy and gene therapy approaches. Areas of clinical focus are:
The centre is a world leader in stem cell transplantation for myelofibrosis, which is also successfully performed in elderly patients (70+). It also chairs several multicentre European studies of allogeneic stem cell transplantation.
Allogeneic peripheral blood or bone marrow stem cell transplantation for malignant haematologic diseases. Either from family donors or foreign donors with particular emphasis on the treatment of leukemia, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, myelodysplasia, and myelofibrosis
The Hubertus Wald Tumour centre offers a comprehensive range of paediatric haematology oncology and stem cell treatments as well as gynaecological oncology, including advanced ovarian cancer.
